Community Description
Radionovka is a small village of 1,500 people, located near the most polluted city in all of Europe, Kryvy Rog, Ukraine.
The community does not have running water. However, it has local river water piped into water stations throughout the village for local use.
The Radionovka Secondary School educates over 140 students, Kindergarten through 11th grade, who come from Radionovka and from five other small villages.
At Radionovka Secondary School the restrooms located inside are rarely used because of the condition of the piping. During the Soviet winter, outhouses are preferred by the children because of the smell of leaking toilet water in the school.
The old piping of the school has long needed to be replaced. Large cracks run along the pipes and allow water to run down the walls.
Project Description
This project is to replace the unserviceable supply and wastewater piping in the girl’s and boy’s bathrooms, as well as the teacher’s bathroom at the Radionovka Secondary School. In addition, two handwashing stations will be created.
Old and cracked pipes in the bathrooms will be replaced by plastic piping. Work will start by replacing the pipes along the first floor of the school and will proceed to the replacement of damaged pipes within the three bathrooms. Finally, the pipes running underneath the school to the septic area will be replaced.
105 meters of pipe with a diameter of 50 cm and 33 meters of pipe with a diameter of 100 cm will be purchased. Various sizes of pipe connectors, glue, and plastic insulation for connecting the pipes will be bought as well.
Two water containers to be used by children to wash their hands will also be purchased and installed in the children’s bathrooms.
The village plumber will direct the project and donate his time and energy. All of the teachers have agreed to help with the replacement of pipes and painting.
The school will sanitize and beautify the bathrooms after completion. This will involve completely cleaning the remains from years of leaking sewage and then painting the bathrooms. The school will provide the paint and labor for this aspect of the project.
Project Impact
This project will benefit 157 people, including 143 children and 14 staff members.

This project will directly affect the sanitation of the school, its students, and staff, thereby impacting upon the health and wellbeing of all who spend their days at the school.
Alexis previously successfully completed the Radionovka Sanitation Project, which resolved the open sewage problem in the same village.
