Community Description
Thilogne is a rapidly growing town with a population of approximately 15,000. It is predominately Muslim, with a 95% Pulaar-speaking population that has a business and work focus on fishing, farming and herding. Because of its location on one of the main roads, goods and materials are easily imported and exported to and from the town.
Lycee and College of Thilogne, the middle school and high school of Thilogne, have a combined student body for of 978 students. Currently, if the students want to relieve themselves, they are forced to go behind the building that houses the latrines and squat in the bushes.
Project Description
This project is to repair and clean the boy’s and girl’s latrines within the middle school and high school.
A local mason, the students, and the Peace Corps Volunteer will work together to unclog the pipes of the non-functioning latrines, replacing piping as needed, clean out the debris from inside the building itself, and clean out the cement holes that contain the waste.
A cement cover over one of the waste basins will be built to prevent further clutter of trash and debris.
Project funds will be used to purchase new PVC pipes, cement and rebar.
One class per week will be assigned to clean the latrines and ensure that they continue working properly.
Project Impact
The project will benefit 1,000 students and staff.

This project follows on the successful completion of the Thilogne Health Post Water Project – Senegal by Peace Corps Volunteer James Edward Gill.
This is a critical sanitation project that will immediately improve the health and well-being of those who go to the schools each day. The planned maintenance will ensure that the latrines will remain functional for some time to come.
