This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Tatiana Nieuwenhuys. To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.
The project was to build three latrines for the school.
Tatiana reports:
The Ethiolo College Latrine Project has been completed. The students and their teachers spent the two Saturdays digging three holes, each two meters deep and two meters wide. They located the two latrines for the female students next to each other and the third latrine for the male students apart.
When the digging was completed, the mason came and capped the latrines. He used four rebar rods and three sacks of cement per latrine. He spent two days making the caps with the help of the students.
Once the project was completed, both the teachers and students came to show their appreciation. They fully realized what a positive impact this will have on the school since they now have readily available bathrooms.
They no longer will have to walk multiple kilometers to go home to use a bathroom. Furthermore, since the students participated in the creation of these latrines, they were taught the skill of making latrines by the mason, which they will be able to use in the future.
Currently, very few family compounds have latrines. In the future, with the knowledge of the health benefits and the method of construction, it is expected that more latrines will be built in the community.
Thanks for all your help and assistance!
We extend our gratitude to Tatiana for completing this important project, and again wish to thank Kelsey Young for providing the funding.
