This project has been completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Bruce Kelsey. To read about the beginning of the project, CLICK HERE.
The project was to expand the sanitation capacity at the school by adding an annex with two more toilets to the existing facility.
Bruce reports:
The latrine project at Prey K’Cheeay School in Chum Kiri district, Kampot province, Cambodia was completed successfully over the weekend.
As planned, the skilled work on the latrine, such as stone & brick masonry, was completed by a local contractor who has built previous projects for us. He is extremely busy at this time of year, as it is dry season and ideal weather for building. We are grateful to him for making space in his schedule to support us, which he did as a favor in recognition of the times we have worked with him before and in recognition of the value to the community of this latrine.
Unskilled heavy labor, such as digging the pit for the septic vault, were completed by the local village. In addition, students were exceptionally eager to participate and carried water to the worksite to support the concrete work. It was great to be part of yet another project where everyone is so enthusiastic.
All aspects of this project went extremely smoothly as a result of using a trusted builder and having the support of the community.
A recent article in Cambodia indicates only 28% of rural Cambodians have access to a proper latrine. I think it is even a lower percentage in Chum Kiri district. Data such as this makes me even more determined to be a part of as many of these projects as I can. Our thanks goes out to Appropriate Projects and all the donors for their support!
We are grateful to Bruce for completing his fifth project in partnership with Water Charity, and again thank Timothy Tarbox and Bruce’s other friends and family for providing the funding.
