Zolotonosha School Number Six Water Project – Ukraine

Location
Zolotonosha, Cherkasy Oblast ,Ukraine

Community Description
Zolotonosha is a community of 30,000, located in central Ukraine. Most people make a living through farming, working in schools or small organizations, or starting small, private businesses.

Access to clean water is a problem for two main reasons. First, there are many ecological issues such as inadequate trash disposal. Garbage is often disposed of in the streets, the river, or in open fields. This is visibly contaminating surface water, and maybe having an effect on groundwater as well. Secondly, the pipe systems within many buildings are outdated and the occupants lack the funds to undertake any repairs.

School Number Six was first established in Zolotonosha in 1761, and its current building was constructed in 1973. Due to a lack of funds, no repair or reconstruction has been done to the water pipe system since the building’s construction in 1973.

In April of 2010, a bioсhemical analysis was done on the water available to the school through the current pipe system. As a result of the old iron pipes, the analysis found iron in the water at 0.2 milligrams per decimeter.

Project Description
This project will reconstruct the water system in School Number Six in order to provide access to clean water for the students and teachers who attend and teach at the school.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase fixtures and materials, including 6 sinks, siphons, faucets, piping, tubing, and mounting materials.

The new pipes will be made of hard plastic, eliminating the iron sediments currently found in the drinking water.

The school will donate labor as well as the supplies needed to repair the wall behind the water sinks.

Project Impact
308 students and 42 teachers on staff will benefit from the project.
