Sukutto Primary School Latrine Project - Senegal

Sukutto Primary School Latrine Project - SenegalLocation
Sukutto, Tambacounda Region, Senegal

Community Description
Sukutto is a small farming community of 1,000 inhabitants in the southeastern part of the Region of Tambacounda. It is located in the Communite Rural of Dialacoto at the entrance of the National Park, Niakola Koba.

The villagers are very hardworking, organized, and motivated to accomplish community development projects.

The Sukutto Primary School is a three-room school house, with 3 teachers working to educate 116 children between the ages of 7 and 12. Since the construction of the school, there has never been a latrine on school grounds and, consequently, the students are forced use the bush instead.

Sukutto Primary School Latrine Project - SenegalMany common illnesses in the community result from the lack of proper waste management and the absence of hand washing practices.

Project Description
This project is to build a latrine facility at the Sukutto Primary School.

This facility will be a simple double-cabinet, squat latrine (male/female), surrounded by cement walls, with a metal roof.

Piping will be installed under the above-ground structure and will run to the waste receptacle in the rear. This design allows for the waste repository to be emptied or changed when full, without the necessity to rebuild the structure

Sukutto Primary School Latrine Project - SenegalProject funding will be used for construction materials, such as iron rebar, cement, doors and piping, as well as for the labor for the more complex masonry.

The Parent/Teacher Association will coordinate the project. They will dig the waste receptacle portion of the latrine, in addition to contributing bricks, sand, and gravel.

Project Impact
The 116 students currently enrolled at the school will benefit from the project.
