Sarre Habadou Well Project - Senegal

Compound - SenegalLocation
Sarre Habadou, Kolda region of Senegal

Community Description
Sarre Habadou is 15 kilometers southeast of Kounkane. It is 6 kilometers away from the closest established road.

The village consists mainly of low-income subsistence farmers. A few villagers make extra money by such trades as repairing bikes and tailoring.

The closest school is located in Coumbadong, 2 km away.

The village has a small health hut, but no resident doctor or nurse. Major health problems for the villagers include malaria, skin infections, and diarrhea.

Currently 330 people live in Sarre Habadou, and they are supplied with water from only four wells.

Project Description
A well will be built close to the health post and will become the closest well for at least three compounds.

Benjamin Bocian - SenegalThe well will be hand dug and the masonry work will be performed by a local well digger and assistant. At a depth of about 20 meters, it will provide a year-round water supply. A rope, pulley, and bucket will be used to draw the water.

Project funds will be used to pay for the labor and transportation of the supplies, and to purchase eight sacks of cement, rope, buckets, and metal support bars.

A community women’s group has supported the project. The community will assume the obligation of maintaining the well upon completion.

Project Impact
This project will provide a clean water source for a community of 330 people.

Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
This project will be directed by Peace Corps Volunteer Benjamin Bocian.
