Sambande Well Improvement Project – Senegal

Sambande Well Improvement Project – SenegalLocation
Sambande, Kaolack, Senega

Community Description
Sambande is a small Seereer village of 500 people located 20 kilometers south of Kaolack and several kilometers from the nearest paved road. There is no electricity and the main source of income for the village is peanut and millet farming.

The village currently has three robinets that provide wash water, but the water is too salty for human consumption. There are two 30 meter deep wells that provide all of the community's drinking and cooking water as well as water for cattle and other livestock. Both wells are cement-lined and were built in the 1980's.

Because the wells are uncovered and in disrepair, the water is contaminated by human and animal waste and they pose a safety hazard to children and livestock.

Project Description
This project is to repair and improve the two wells in Sambande.

Sambande Well Improvement Project – SenegalTwo rebar and cement well covers will be constructed. Each will have a metal door for the drawing of water.

In addition, the cement platform around the central well will be repaired.

The project will be carried out under the direction of the Sambande Hygiene Committee.

An experienced mason will be hired to supervise the work.

Upon completion of this project the women of the village will attend a water-sanitation presentation to learn strategies for keeping their drinking water clean and preventing water-borne illness.

Comments
Keeping the wells in repair and covering them will reduce the spread of water-borne illnesses, such as giardia, and give the villagers safety and convenience in drawing water from the well.

This project is being coordinated with the Sambande School Latrine Project – Senegal, a separate project being undertaken by Jennie in the same community. It will allow for benefit to be derived from the use of a mason who comes from another village, in that both projects will be accomplished in a single trip.
