Saly Escale Latrine Project – Senegal

Saly Escale Latrine Project – SenegalLocation
Saly Escale, Koungheul, Kaffrine, Senegal

Community Description
Saly Escale is in the District of Koungheul, Region of Kaffrine, Senegal. It is located approximately 20 km southwest of the capital of the 'Département de Koungheul.'

Despite it's designation as the capital of the 'Communauté Rurale de Saly,' the village remains financially depressed.

Currently, only a fraction of the community's 200 residents have convenient access to a latrine toilet. There is an intense demand for latrine construction.

Project Description
This project is to dig pit latrines for 10 residential compounds. Each pit will be cement-lined (for longevity) and covered with a cement lid laced with iron reinforcing bar.

Saly Escale Latrine Project – SenegalThe project is being undertaken under the direction of the Men's Collective of Saly Escale.

The latrines will be a square-shaped hole with 1.5 meter sides. They will be 2.5 meters to 3.0 meters in depth. The sunken walls will be lined with cement bricks.

The latrines will be covered with cement lids that are reinforced with a skeleton of iron reinforcing bar. This construction ensures that the lid will sustain a person’s weight without bowing and cracking.

The enclosures will be the responsibility of the residents, at their own expense. There are several alternatives, but it is anticipated that millet stalk fences will be erected by most.

Supplies (cement and construction rebar) will be purchased in Koungheul (the nearest road town) and transported to Saly Escale by rural taxis, at a nominal transport cost.

Labor will be provided by the community’s men using picks, shovels, and trowels available in their own homes. There are a number of skilled masons in the community who are available to prepare the bricks for the latrine walls.
