Projects Currently Underway
Kebare Village, Nyabasi West Region, Kuria East District, Migori County, Nyanza Province, Kenya
Most individuals in the Nyabasi West community are subsistence farmers with harvesting seasons in the months of August and December. There are high rates of unemployment and poverty in the community. There is also a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and a lack of safe water access in the community.
Kebare Primary School has 150 students, comprised of 80 boys and 70 girls.
There is currently one pit latrine being used among the 150 students, faculty, and additional church members on the school/church grounds. The latrine is located approximately 50 meters from the main classrooms, so the students have to walk quite a distance to use the facility.
The latrine, built using mud and sticks, is structurally unstable and poses a danger of collapsing during the heavy rainy seasons.
The latrine also has no door or lock, raising grave privacy and security concerns for young girls and boys using the facility. Moreover, the latrine raises various public health concerns.
Many of the students at the school do not have adequate footwear, increasing the likelihood of contracting diseases from the latrine floor.
This project is to build a latrine at the school.
The pit will be dug to a depth of 20 feet and lined with bricks for stability. The base, slab, and mound of the pit latrine will be made using concrete, and the latrine will be ventilated using plastic tubing with a fly mesh.
The community will provide the unskilled labor, such as digging of the pit and heavy lifting. They will also provide sand and technicians to help with cementing the bricks.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the materials, including bricks, cement, iron sheets, gravel, doors with locks, and ventilated pipe with fly mesh, and tools, such as shovels, saws and hammers.
Over 150 people will benefit from the project.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
The new structure will be stable, safe, sanitary and easily accessible by the students. The new concrete foundation will allow for easy cleaning. There will be significant health benefits for all who attend the school.
