Kashongi Trading Center Ferro-Cement Tank Project – Uganda

Kahongi High School has 300 students half of them girls. 60 of the girls board at the school, meaning they sleep at the school throughout the term. Currently they collect water from a dirty pond that is also used by livestock.

Not only is the water unsafe, the headmaster of the school is concerned about the safety of the girls going down to collect water in the evenings. The pond is in a secluded place, where sexual assault is far too common.

Project Description
This project is to build a 6,000 liter ferro-cement rainwater tank and collection system at the girls dorm of the Kashongi High School.

The first step in building the tank is to clear and level the construction site. The next step is to build a wire-reinforced concrete bottom to be used as a base for the tank.

Next, a mold of the tanks is constructed out of wire. Wire mesh is attached to the inside and outside. Then the tank is built up around the form by applying waterproof cement to the both sides of the form.

The valve system is a tap that is purchased from the hardware store. It is put in before plastering the walls.

Finally, a form is built for the roof, and the roof is constructed in the same way.

The tank is then allowed to dry for a period of one week. Once the tank is dry, gutters are attached to the nearby building and piping is run from the gutters to the tank to collect the rainwater from the roof.

Work will be done by local contract workers with experience in the field.

Water Charity funds will be used to pay for materials and labor.

Comments
The project will provide the community with an ample supply of clean water. Rainfall in the rainy season will be sufficient to fill the tank, thus supplying water for the girls during the dry season. This will greatly reduce the incidence of waterborne illness suffered in the community.
