Kandieng Reay Health Center Bathroom Project - Cambodia

Kandieng Reay Health Center Bathroom Project - Cambodia

Location
Prosaut Village, Svay Teab District, Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia

Community DescriptionKandieng Reay Health Center Bathroom Project - Cambodia
Kandieng Reay Health Center is located within Cambodia’s Svay Rieng Province and provides health care services for 21 villages (with a population of 21,493 people according to a 2012 survey). The health center currently maintains a staff of 9 and receives between 1,200 – 1,500 visitors per month.

The health center’s only bathroom is located about 100 meters from the back door of the building. At present, trips to the bathroom cause great distress to the patients, both physically and emotionally. The field that must be crossed is uneven and difficult due to the American bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. Moreover, during the rainy season, this field floods and patients must wade through knee-high water.

Project Description
This project is to build a new bathroom at the health center.

The new bathroom will be built directly adjacent to the back of the building, so patients will only need to step out the back door to use it. The structure will include two separate restrooms, for use by all persons.

As is typical in rural Cambodia, a pump and PVC piping will move water from an existing water tank to the building, where a small bucket in the restroom can be filled as needed. The water is used to clean up, hand flush the toilet, and wash hands. A small soap dish and soap will be located in each restroom.

As is customary in Cambodia, all materials will be bought in the nearest location possible, and transport is included in the purchase price.

The land will be filled and leveled, and a layer of concrete, sand, iron pipes, and bricks will be laid as a foundation. The walls will be supported by concrete pillars, framed with iron bars for durability, and covered with concrete. The doors and the roof will be aluminum panels.

Each concrete septic tank will have a diameter of 1 meter and be ½ meter deep, with a PVC pipe for air ventilation.

Once started, construction will take only two weeks to finish. After about 2 ½ years, the tank will fill, but the health center staff can empty it manually as needed.

Kandieng Reay Health Center Bathroom Project - CambodiaWater Charity funds will be used to purchase the materials, including bricks, sand, concrete, iron, tin, piping, septic tank, septic tank covers, and Khmer-style toilets, and to pay for the skilled labor.

The center will contribute an electric pump and connection to electricity, and will pay any additional expenses needed to complete the project.

Project Impact
An average of 16,200 people who visit the health center each year will benefit from the project.
