C.E. de Padaf Latrine Project - Senegal

C.E. de Padaf Latrine Project - Senegal

Location
Padaf, Kaolack, Senegal

Community Description
Padaf is a farming community in the region of Kaolack, Senegal. It is located toward the center of Senegal, above The Gambia, and backs up to a large salt water tributary to the Gambia River.

This spacious village consists of 132 households. The residents are heavily reliant upon the harvests of field crops grown during the summer months. Millet, peanuts and corn are grown, as typical for the area, but sesame is also widely grown in and around Padaf.

Vegetable gardening, livestock and poultry raising are other subsistence and income generating activities throughout the year. Wolof is the primary ethnic group and language of the village. There is no electricity, but the residents benefit from running water.

The primary school on the edge of the village, C.E. de Padaf, is in need of a latrine. There are 82 students who attend this school, and two teachers.

Project Description
This project is to build a latrine structure at the school.

The structure, with two stalls, will be built under the direction of a mason, who has already been selected.

Water Charity funds will be used to buy the supplies to build the latrine, including cement, Eastern-style toilets, pipes, concrete, and tin roofing, as well as to pay for the labor of the mason.

The community has already begun to dig the large hole. The women bring water to soften the earth and the men dig.

The community will also retrieve sand and clay to mix with the cement for the cinder blocks.

Project Impact
84 people will benefit from the project.

Comments
This project has great community support, and the families have already begun the work in anticipation of obtaining the resources to complete the project. A latrine is essential for an orderly learning environment, and will greatly improve the health and wellbeing of the students and staff.

Thomas previously completed the C.E.M. de Kaymor Latrine Project – Senegal.
