Projects Currently Underway
Apeni is a sizable village of 2,000 folk in eastern Kakheti, the famous wine-growing district in the former soviet-bloc republic Georgia. It has three schools and several shops, including a furniture store, an electronics store, and a popular farmer’s market for the area on Thursdays. Most people who live there are farmers, though there are a few tradesmen and some who commute to nearby cities for work.
Apeni’s Public School #1 is found on the west side of the village, set back from the road on beautiful grounds with large trees, a soccer field, a court, and many places for students to meet and relax after classes. The school is a two-story building with many large classrooms, a computer lab, and newly installed windows which will help keep the school warm in the winter. Currently in attendance are 312 students.
However Apeni Public School #1 lacks a water supply to its restrooms and does not have a place for students and staff to wash their hands.
The well will be dug to a depth of five meters. Four concrete casings will be used to line the well. A submersible pump will pump up water through PVC piping to a 500 L drum holding tank on the top of the walkway. The pipe will be covered with pipe insulation.
Apeni #1 school building has two main sections with classrooms connected by a walkway. This walkway has a door on each side that leads outdoors to the paths that lead to the bathrooms. One side leads to the student bathrooms and the other side to the faculty bathroom. In both cases, the bathrooms are about 50 meters away from the school, and lack sinks. A handwashing station will be installed on each side in a location where students and staff will be able to wash their hands easily at any time.
The tank will be connected to the sinks below by plastic tubing. PVC pipe will connect the sinks to the drains.
The well and drains will be covered by concrete slabs already on hand.
Water Charity funds will be used for materials and labor, and the school will make up the funds necessary to complete the project.
400 people will benefit directly from the project.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
This is an ambitious and important project to address the needs of the school to provide for proper hygiene and sanitation. Proper handwashing will prevent the spread of illness among the students and staff.
