Sanankoro Well Project – Senegal

This project is made possible through the partnership of WATER CHARITY and the NATIONAL PEACE CORPS ASSOCIATION.

Location
Sanankoro, Kolda, Senegal

Community Description
Sanankoro is a village in Kolda, Senegal, with a population of 250 people. The village has 3 usable drinking water wells, all in centralized locations.

The women and girls living in more remote locations must pull water from distant wells for all of their daily needs, including for drinking, cooking, laundry, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as for watering gardens.

Problem Addressed
Almost half of the village lacks a reliable and convenient source of safe water.

Many villagers farthest from the existing wells have to walk into another village to retrieve their water.

Project Description
This project is to build a well to serve a part of the village that does not have ready access to water.

The well will be dug by Mamadou Moussa Diallo, a well-digger from Kolda, who has demonstrated his expertise in nearby villages. Diallo and his team will dig the well with pickaxes, and remove loose dirt by the bucket.

The well will be lined with cement, with horizontal and vertical rebar for reinforcement.

The community will contribute sand and local materials, transport the materials, and cook lunch for the well diggers.

Water Charity funds will be used to buy materials, including cement and rebar, a pulley, buckets, and rope, and to pay the well digger.

Project Impact
250 people will benefit from the project.

Monitoring and Maintenance
The well will be built to serve for many years, taking into consideration the expected lowering of the water table over time. The conditions will be monitored by the local women, who will implement plans for maintenance, such as for patching the lining or digging the well deeper, should such be needed

Comments
This project will improve the standard of living of the people of Sanankoro, especially women and girls.
