Samroung Chhai Well Project – Cambodia

Location
Samroung Chhai Village, Bavel District, Battambang Province, Cambodia

Community Description
Samroung Chhai is a small farming community located 7 kilometers outside of Bavel town. Currently 105 families reside in the village.

Hodaka Primary School is the only school in the village of Samroung Chhai. At the end of the last school year approximately 178 students between the ages of 6 and 11 were enrolled in the school.

The school’s only well is broken and in need of repair. Because of this the children and teachers have no access to water during the school day. Additionally, without water the school’s toilets cannot be used.

Project Description
This project is to drill a new well so the children and teachers can have access to drinking water and functioning toilets.

The community will pay a private driller to come out to the site to assess and determine where to drill a new well next to the non-functional old well. He will then bring his equipment out to drill the hole. It is anticipated that water will be reached at a depth of 70 meters.

Project funds will be used to purchase new pipe, which will be transported to the community and placed in the new hole. Funding will also be used to purchase needed pump parts. The old head of the pump and a hand pump will be used from the broken well.

The community will provide all the labor for the project.

The community will purchase concrete to put around the well for the water runoff. Local men from the community will mix the cement and lay it out around the well.

After the well is completed a sample of the water will be sent to Phnom Penh to test for arsenic in the water. Once it is determined that the water is safe, the water will then be used to fill the toilets and water filters in the school.

If the well should break again, a local NGO called Association Cooperation for Development promises to provide funds for future repairs.

Once the new school year has begun there will be an event at the school to educate the children on the importance of sanitation.

Project Impact
This project will benefit the 200 students expected to attend the school next year.
