Community Description
Nova Praha is a village located in the easternmost part of the Kirovograd’ska Oblast in Ukraine. When the Soviet Union was still in power, Nova Praha was a flourishing city, with a sunflower oil factory as its main job supplier. Nova Praha was the Rayon center at the time and continued to grow until Ukraine gained its independence in 1994.
Once a free country, Nova Praha began to lose many of its inhabitants, leaving the city with many abandoned buildings and no additional income. Within the village of Nova Praha live 5,000 people, 1,000 of whom are students attending the two public secondary schools and one boarding school.
Nova Praha Educational Complex was founded in 1964 during Soviet rule and has since been working hard to create a better educational environment for its current 345 students ranging from 1st form to 11th.
Many of the teenagers living in Nova Praha are mostly alone due to their parents working in other towns in Ukraine. The teachers understand that the greatest impact on these teens is achieved through education. With over 350 students and teachers in the building daily using the one working toilet, much time is taken away from the lessons in order to wait for a turn to use the bathroom. A non-working bathroom needs re-piping and new fixtures to make it functional.
Project Description
This project is to renovate and upgrade an indoor bathroom at the Nova Praha Educational Complex.
The piping in the non-working bathroom will be replaced as needed. Both squatting toilets will be replaced with functional sitting toilets. The broken and unused sink will be replaced. Two doors will be put on the stalls so that multiple students will be able to use the facilities at once.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the fixtures, piping, and other materials.
Community members will install the new toilets and sink as well as perform the plumbing work. They will also assist in the transport of materials from the Rayon center to the school.
Project Impact
465 students, faculty, staff, and volunteers will benefit from the project.
