Molodohvardiysk School Ten Water Project – Ukraine

Location
Molodohvardiysk, Lugansk Oblast, Ukraine

Community Description
The town of Molodohvardiysk has a population of 20,000 and is situated in the easternmost oblast of Ukraine, Lugansk. This is the industrial center of Ukraine, and largely focuses on coal mining.

This region of the country is notorious for water problems. The town-wide water supply is shut off daily in the afternoons, and complete water shortages can last for days. Due to old infrastructure, it is not uncommon for underground piping to rupture, leaving sewage flowing through the streets.

Molodohvardiysk is not near any natural water source, which leaves the community completely reliant on the faulty plumbing systems.

School Ten is one of three schools in the town, and boasts high academic achievement. The grounds of the school are no longer adequate to host the 650 students, and the school day is split into shifts to maximize classroom space.

Since the school population has nearly doubled in size over the past twenty years, the various water reservoirs in the school are no longer adequate.

Since the water in town is shut off in the afternoons, school children and staff members have limited ways to wash their hands, flush toilets, and maintain basic sanitation. Currently, there are small hand washing stations and buckets to help with this problem, but they are insufficient. There is often no water in necessary places, negatively affecting the entire school population.

Project Description
This project is to provide reliable water to School Ten by purchasing and installing water reservoirs.

Project funds will be used to purchase four water reservoirs (ranging from 130-250 liters in size), which will be strategically placed throughout the school.

These reservoirs will hold water that will be used to refill hand washing stations, refill toilets (so they can flush), and assist with the cleaning of the school.

Funds will also be used to purchase new hand washing stations, plastic piping and other materials necessary for installation.

The school will contribute by providing the labor for the installation of these new resources, and will also participate in school-wide lessons about water and the importance of hand washing and sanitation.

Project Impact
717 people will benefit from the project, including 650 students, 52 teachers, and 15 staff.
