Community Description
Leliani is a small agrarian village (pop. 2,000) located in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. The village is situated near the Azerbaijani border, and is a multi-ethnic village with ethnic Georgians and Ossetians living together.
Leli 1 is a non-governmental, non-political organization based in the
village of Leliani. Its mission is to develop the community and to promote inter-cultural relations.
Leli 1 successfully completed 26 projects over the past 4 years, directed toward developing and educating community members, supporting the creative and physical potential of teenagers and youth, and addressing the needs and rights of women.
The community center “Leli 1” functions as a youth center and serves the people of Leliani and its surrounding villages, including Azerbaijani and Ossetain villages, by creating and implementing various projects.
Recent project includes English classes, technical trainings for young people and farmers, projects promoting intercultural tolerance and understanding between the Azerbaijani, Georgian and Ossetian peoples, and special seminars on women’s health, including doctor examinations.
Additionally, the community center “Leli 1” operates a community gym which is used for various exercise classes. The gym also serves as a meeting place for many of the aforementioned projects.
Currently, the community center “Leli 1” lacks a working sink for people to wash their hands, as well as a sanitary toilet.
Project Description
This project is to renovate an existing but nonfunctional and unsanitary bathroom at the community center.
A new sink and toilet will be installed, and other improvements will be done to make the bathroom functional and sanitary.
The water is supplied by a village well and stored in an above-ground 3,000-liter water reservoir. The bathroom is connected to an underground concrete tank (approximately 30,000 liters) where the sewage is stored and occasionally removed by a truck.
The work includes tiling for the floors, plastic siding for the walls, and glass for the windows (for the window panes that currently lack glass). The budget also includes the necessary materials for the installation of these items, such as concrete to form a level floor for the tiles, and adhesive for the plastic siding.
The work will be performed by a villager who has plumbing experience. The fixtures, supplies, and materials will be obtained locally.
Project Impact
Over 200 people who consistently use the community center will benefit from this project. Additional people to be served include those who attend festivals and other events at the center.

This project will improve the sanitary conditions at the community center, thus reducing illness. It will most directly help the children and teenagers who regularly attend events at the youth center and the community members who use the gym.
