Koboye Latrine Project – Senegal

Location
Koboye, Fongolimbi District, Kedougou Region, Senegal

Community Description
Koboye is a small community of 400 people, located about 40 kilometers from Kedougou, situated on a small mountain bordering Guinea. Access is difficult, and it is expensive to transport materials, such as sacks of cement and rebar, to the village.

It is estimated that there are as few as 3 working latrines in the village. People use a fenced-off section for urinating and go into the woods to defecate. Children often defecate in the yard near the houses. The poor sanitation leads to a high incidence of gastro-intestinal illness.

Project Description
This project is to construct 12 latrines in the village of Koboye.

Each of the families will be required to dig the 1 m by 1 m hole for its latrine. The lining will not be required due to the soil composition.

The masonry work will be split between two masons from Koboye. They will be responsible for the construction of the concrete tops. The platforms are built by placing a piece of woven bamboo over the hole, then applying some cement, adding rebar, and finally adding a layer of cement.

Locally woven fencing made of bamboo will be used for privacy. Transportation for the materials will be provided by a local market truck.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase materials, including rebar, cement, and fencing, as well as to pay for transportation and labor.

The Peace Corps Volunteer will visit with each family individually to discuss the maintenance of latrines and the importance of handwashing after use. Children will be encouraged to use the latrines. World Vision has done a demonstration on “Tippy-taps” for hygiene, and most compounds use one.

Project Impact
About 100 community members will benefit from this project.

Comments
The project will introduce about one-fourth of the village to the use of latrines. As a demonstration project, this will spur the interest of the remainder of the community to build more latrines in the future. To maximize the reduction of disease, the aim will be to attain close to 100% compliance.
