Community Description
Kondoa District as a whole is underdeveloped compared to other areas of Tanzania, and funding for primary schools is a low priority in the district budget.
Kisese-Dissa Village is a small agricultural village far from any major towns. The community is 95% Muslim with farming as the main source of income. Bad crop yields during drought years keep much of the population well under the poverty line.
Formal education takes a back seat to religious studies, rendering it difficult to raise funds for area schools. A dedicated committee at the Kisese-Dissa Primary School, however, is steadily working to make necessary improvements and spread a culture of education throughout the village.
The school serves over 900 students. The headmaster, Samwel Mstakonywa, brings income-generating opportunities to the school and heads other improvement projects.
The school has only makeshift waste facilities of mud and grass. The existing latrines at the school are full and unusable.
Project Description
Four drop latrines will be constructed at the primary school.
Construction will take four weeks. Local craftsmen will do the cement and plastering work while the school committee and students will do other non-skilled tasks.
During the first week the area will be cleared, wells will be dug, sand will be collected and delivered to build the foundation, concrete floor slabs will be constructed and the construction of doors will begin.
During the second week, the retaining walls will be built in the wells, the foundation will be built, floor slabs will be installed, and work on the doors will be completed.
Work during the third week will involve the construction of walls and the installation of doors.
The fourth and final week will see the installation of roofing, the application of plaster to the walls and the painting of the entire structure.
Project funds will be managed by the headmaster Samwel Mstakonya and overseen by Vincent Kilave, another teacher.
Water Charity funds will be used to pay for cement, wood, paint, plaster, nails, sheet metal, skilled labor costs, and buckets for each lavatory
The community will supply the rest of the materials and construction costs (rebar, wire mesh, sand, gravel).
