Kashongi Trading Center Ferro-Cement Tank Project – Uganda

Location
Kashongi Trading Center, Kiruhura District, Uganda

Community Description
The Kashongi Trading Center is located in Southwest Uganda, with a population of about 200. Kashongi Sub County suffers due to a lack of water at a greater level than the rest of Uganda. While on average safe water coverage is 55 percent, in rural Uganda it is only 35 percent in this sub-county.

In the trading center, there are a few rain tanks that, due to demand, are dry by the first week of the dry season, and are used by only a few in the community.

Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater storage tank at a public facility, the Local Chairman I’s office.

The water will go to those who do not currently have safe drinking water. The Local Chairman I has agreed to help manage the tank so that the water goes to those most in need.

The project is being implemented under the direction of the Kashongi Farmers SACCO.

The tank will hold 6,000 liters, and will be built using a ferro-cement technique on a base of bricks. A local company will be contracted to build the tank using a brick press and bricks made at site, along with a mesh frame upon which cement is applied.

The community is participating by contributing the building site with a tin roof, and will be responsible to maintain the tank after construction.

Project funds will be used for materials, including cement, welded mesh, chicken mesh, tap system, wire, cover, piping, sand, stone, poles, bricks, and gutters. They will also be used to pay for skilled labor and the transport of materials.

The local officials are mobilizing the rest of the funds from within the community in the form of cash, materials, and contributions of labor.

Project Impact
200 people will benefit from clean water as a result of this project.
