- Who We Are
This project is made possible through the partnership of Water Charity and Friendly Water for the World.
Nyegezi, Mwanza, Tanzania
Mwanza is a mid-sized port city on the southern shores of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania. With a population of over 700,000, it is Tanzania's second largest city, following Dar es Salaam. Mwanza is the capital of the surrounding Mwanza Region.
Due to the lack of access to clean drinking water, water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, amoeba, typhoid fever and many more which are threats to human health.
BioSand water project was introduced to the community for the purpose of providing safe and clean water to people in order to reduce water-related diseases. This project will be a WASH and Bio Sand Water filter Fabrication Training. The project has proven high performance in many areas especially in low developed countries like Tanzania where access to safe water is still a problem. Improvement of people’s health also was noted and there has been a rise in living standards of people who are engaged in the project. New employment opportunities is another impact of this project here in Tanzania; Approximately 200 group members who have been trained are now employed under this project through fabrication and selling filters to earn income. Due to that fact, funding this project will provide employment to 25 youth from Village of Hope-Mwanza (VOH) located at Nyegezi.
Community Life Amelioration Organization (CLAO) is the local organization (initiated by Tanzanian) registered under nongovernmental Organization act, 2002 (registration no 00NGO/0008807) aim to implement bio sand water filter project here in Tanzania in collaboration with Friendly Water for the World as our sister organization (International) and the main funder of the project. CLAO hopes to partner with other local, national and International organization on the same project. CLAO will be working with community at grassroots level in different projects initiated to raise community well,-being economically, socially and in terms of health. Under this proposal, CLAO will organize the training; do preparation for all other requirements of the training, conduct the training, monitor and evaluate the project’s progress and finally provide report to Friendly Water for the World.
Our vision is “to see a sustainable community where everyone has a decent and contented life”
“Fostering rational utilization of skills and manpower for sustainable development in both social and economic spheres as well as creating friendly environment in order to ensure diversity sources of income and improve livelihoods of communities.
Project partner: Village of Hope is a nonprofit organization exists for the sole purpose of bringing hope to vulnerable children in Mwanza. They try to accomplish this by providing vulnerable children with shelter, education, healthcare and nutrition. They are currently serving over 300 children through their children’s home and school.
The vision of Village of Hope-Mwanza is that all children are loved and care for.
Village of Hope-Mwanza exists to bring lasting hope to the children at risk so they can embrace adulthood as independent and contributing members of the society.
Village of Hope-Mwanza came to exist due to stories of children include abandonment and death of one or both parents. Many of the children were found abandoned on a certain area and brought to police and then to social welfare brought them to VOH. A few stories involve the death of both parents and family being unable to care for the child. In some cases the dead at birth and no family was available.
Children are raised at the center till the age of 18 years then released back to the society to start independence life. It became a challenge for them to cope with community life as far as some of them doesn’t even know their relative yet with no life skills apart from home based education that they have been received all those years spent in VOH. Perhaps, providing them with skills and knowledge on various issues could help them to manage their life after leaving VOH.
Each year, number of youths (from VOH) complete their secondary education with no hope for further studies hence become burden to the society again or engage themselves in psychosocial behaviors.
Due to that fact, as bio sand water filter project exist and do well here in Tanzania, VOH saw the need to train these youth so that they will initiate their own project (bio sand water filter) to employ themselves.
More than 300 children living at Village of Hope-Mwanza, more than 30 workers employed with VOH will access safe and clean water. Trained youth on the other hand will employ themselves hence earn income but also community around will be benefited in a number of ways.
