Usine Coton Rope Pump Project - Senegal

Location
Usine Coton, Kolda, Senegal

Community Description
This project will take place in a part of Usine Coton comprised of 38 people living in 4 houses. They share the use of one well.

Each day the women use the centrally-located well to obtain water for drinking, cooking, doing laundry, bathing, washing clothes, and watering their gardens. They spend a lot of time and energy pulling water from the deep well and carrying it back to their houses.

Usine Coton Rope Pump Project - SenegalProject Description
This project is to install a rope pump on the well in Usine Coton.

The rope pump was designed by the Full Belly project as a system that is easy to fabricate, use, and fix. It works as a basic rope pulley, mounted above a well, attached to a series of PVC pipes. Upon turning the handle of the pulley, the rope, fixed with plastic stoppers (made from old bidon bottles), catches Water on the way up the pipe, delivering water through a spout into a bucket.

All of the materials are locally available. The fabrication and installation will include all of the members who use the well, so that if something breaks everyone knows how to fix it.

Usine Coton Rope Pump Project - SenegalProject Impact
All 38 people in the village will directly benefit from the project.
