Primary School of Xol Xol Niangen Water Project - Senegal

Location
Xol Xol Niangen, Department of Linguere, Louga Region, Senegal

Community DescriptionPrimary School of Xol Xol Niangen Water Project - SenegalXol Xol Niangen is a small community of about 600 people predominantly of the Wolof ethnic group. The male adult population is made up of primarily farmers who travel to work in the dry season and return in the rainy season to work the fields.

The Linguere region is in Northern central Senegal and the climate is extremely hot and dry much of the year, with a short rainy season between July and September.

There is a deep bore well in the village, but there is no water at the school.

Project Description
This project is to extend the pipeline to bring water from the village well to the primary school, and build a spigot to provide easy access to the water.

Local masons living in the nearby community of Merina Xol Xol will supervise the labor, and community members will contribute to the digging of trenches for the pipeline to run.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the pipe, hosing, spigot, and pay for a portion of the professional labor.

The community has committed to pay the remaining money for labor, as well as their in-kind contribution of time and labor.

Primary School of Xol Xol Niangen Water Project - SenegalFollowing construction the Parent Teacher Association will pay for monthly water bills.

Project Impact
74 students and 3 teachers at the school will benefit from the project.

Comments
This access to a reliable source of clean water will provide water for school lunches, allow for the creation of a school garden, improve sanitation and handwashing, and facilitate the development of the tree nursery.
