Mwihoti Secondary School Latrine Project - Kenya

Mwihoti Secondary School Latrine Project - Kenya
Location
Ol'Kalou, Central Province, Kenya

Community Description
The community comprised within the Mugumo Primary School and Mwihoti Secondary School districts are primarily Kikuyu. The Kikuyu tribe is majority made up of substance farmers. The families in this district mostly grow and harvest cash crops such as corn and potatoes which makes up their entire income. In addition, the families have a small kitchen garden where they will grow fresh greens such as spinach and kale.

The particular area where these two schools are located is at a higher income level where the families not only participate in substance farming but some are community health workers or work in the Ol'Kalou District Hospital.

The Mwihoti Secondary School is a new school, only 7 weeks old. Currently they only have 9 students, with 2 teachers and 1 headmaster, but the number is expected to grow exponentially once the next term begins in the fall. The school is located on the tarmac road and it is believed that the convenience of this will bring secondary students from villages farther away.

At present, there is only one latrine for the use of both boys and girls.

Mugumo Primary School is connected to Mwihoti Secondary School with the same headmaster.

Mwihoti Secondary School Latrine Project - KenyaProject Description
This project has three parts:

(1) Build a latrine for the girls at the secondary school.
The community has already dug the pit for the latrine which measures at 40 feet. The structure will be built by local community skilled laborers.

The community will supply the building stones and sand.

(2) Purchase and install a rainwater catchment system, consisting of a 3,200 liter tank and gutters at the primary school.
The school will purchase and install the rain gutters. The work will be done by the same workers who built the existing latrine.

(3) Build 5 handwashing stations, of 750 liters each at the secondary school.
The stations will be built by the students for an educational experience.

The tanks will be filled by the teacher staff each day and will be set by the latrines. The students will construct a tippy tap station they will hold soap for the water tanks.

Mwihoti Secondary School Latrine Project - KenyaWater Charity funds will be used to purchase the tanks and materials, including the necessary cement, and to pay for skilled labor.

Project Impact
It is anticipated that 49 children, 6 teachers, and the headmaster will benefit from the project in the upcoming year.
