Kewoye Latrine Project – Senegal

Kewoye Latrine Project – Senegal
Location
Kewoye, Kedougou, Senegal

Community Description
Kewoye is a rural community 90 km west of Kedougou in southeastern Senegal, just 35 km from the Guinean border. It has a population of about 600 people.

The vast majority of residents are farmers. The primary crops grown are rice, corn, peanuts, and cotton.

A few men participate in selling of goods at the local weekly market in Thiokoy, as there are no local boutiques. Also, there are several trained masons and well diggers.

There is a single two room primary school. Students go to a nearby town for secondary school. Very few households have electricity through solar panels. The majority of women in the community participate in the local women's group through gardening and health meetings. Several houses have latrines, but most do not.

Project Description
This project is to build 10 latrines in 10 compounds.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the materials and transport them to the site.

The work will be done by several trained masons in the community.

The weekly schedule is as follows:

Week 1: Hole digging (by individuals in compounds receiving latrines)
Week 2: Transport materials (concrete, rebar, iron tying wire)
Week 3: Construction & monitoring
Week 4: Continue construction & monitoring, as well as conduct hygiene workshops.

Several meetings will be held with the women’s group and others from the community regarding sanitation and the importance of washing hands after using the latrine.

Kewoye Latrine Project – SenegalProject Impact
60 people will directly benefit from the project, although the whole community will benefit, as people move freely between compounds.

Comments
Latrines are important for the environment as well as personal health. Defecation will be kept out of environment and the nearby river where children play, women do laundry and bathe, and some families get water.

The project will serve as a model to encourage the construction of additional latrines in the community.
