- Who We Are
Chebunyo is one of the largest trading centers in the district. It is located about 1 ½ hours off the tarmac road. Despite the poor infrastructure, people come from all over the South Rift region to trade and sell livestock, dairy, foods, and other materials. The community is made up of the Kipsigis people.
Chebunyo Christian Primary School was started in 1998 to assist the overpopulation of children then attending the only primary school in the village of Chebunyo.
The school accommodates children from all denominations. Its main objective is to allow both male and female students access to quality education, and it grants opportunities for orphans and vulnerable children to receive scholarships.
The school does not have running water and the students must travel off of school grounds twice a day to fetch 10-20 liters of water. The toilets are tin shacks, and there is no handwashing system available.
This project is to install an efficient rainwater catchment system and two handwashing stations at the Chebunyo Christian Primary School.
Gutters will be attached to the roof of each of two gender-appropriate toilets. A 750 liter tank will be installed in each stall. Each tank will have a spout to be utilized for washing hands after using the restroom.
The construction of the handwashing stations will be done by skilled labor, and finished in time for the rainy season to fill the tanks!
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the two tanks and the materials, including gutters, nails, soap, and wood, and to transport them to the site.
Local craftsmen and other community members will build the platforms and install the tanks, gutters and connective piping.
After the project is completed a lesson will be taught on hygiene and sanitation, with a handwashing demonstration.
355+ students and 26 staff will benefit from this project.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
This is a modest project to bring needed infrastructure to the school. It will eliminate the burden that the students now face to bring water to the school for all its needs, thus improving the health and wellbeing of those who occupy the school each day.
