Angmotreysatram Primary School Latrine Project - Cambodia

Angmotreysatram Primary School Latrine Project - CambodiaLocation
Chum Kiri district, Kampot province, Cambodia

Community Description
Chum Kiri, founded in 1993, is the newest and poorest district in the southern province of Kampot. Khmer Rouge forces did not concede defeat in this area until as late as 1998. Due to the prolonged hostilities in the region, development has been extraordinarily slow compared to other districts in Kampot province.

Located 45 kilometers from the provincial capital and 12 km from the nearest highway, the majority of families survive on subsistence agriculture, and few venture outside of the district due to the decrepit road conditions. Road conditions are now improving in the district center, due to a massive road project started in recent months, but these changes have not yet affected Angmotreysatram, which is a farming village located about 10 kilometers from the only town and market in the district.

The Angmotreysatram Primary School serves students in grades 1 to 6. The sanitary facilities for the students are inadequate.

In 2008, new brick classrooms were built across a road about 50 meters west of the old structures. However, project funding was withdrawn partway through construction, so no new latrines were built.

There are currently only two squat toilets and they are located at the extreme east end of the school property, next to the original wooden school building that is now used as a teacher dormitory. The long distance and poor condition of the old latrines (doors are missing) causes students to skip class and return to their own homes when they need to use a toilet.

Angmotreysatram Primary School Latrine Project - CambodiaProject Description
This project is to build two toilets at the school.

The two new squat toilets will be located in a stand-alone building next to the newer classrooms. The latrine building will be constructed of brick with a metal roof. Water will primarily be provided by cisterns that will catch the rain runoff, supplemented by water from the school's well when needed.

The toilets will be of the standard concrete vault type that is used throughout rural Cambodia.

Unskilled labor, such as digging the pit, will be completed by the staff at the school, and by local villagers. Brick and stone work will be performed by skilled concrete workers who will be paid using Appropriate Projects funds.

Project funds will also be used to purchase the needed concrete, bricks, doors, toilet basins, roofing, and other materials.

Project Impact
408 people will benefit from the project, including 399 students and 9 staff members.
