Kolibantang Pump Project – The Gambia

Kolibantang, Wuli West District, The Gambia

Community Description
Kolibantang is located in the Upper River Region of The Gambia. The village includes 36 family compounds, with a population of nearly 525 people.

The village is composed of two primary tribes. The composition of Kolibantang is 90% Mandinkas and 10% Fulas. The village is located 5 km from the nearest health center.

Most of the community members are subsistent farmers, carpenters, or businessmen. The businessmen commute 10 km to work in a nearby city.

Kolibantang currently has one functioning water pump in the village, and one that needs repairs. The broken water pump was built in 1996 to enable safe drinking water for students and staff at Kolibantang Lower Basic School. The water pump provided clean drinking water until two years ago when two main parts of the pump broke.

Due to the location of the pump, 225 students, along with 10 staff members are affected daily. The closest pump is over one kilometer away from the school and water must be fetched by students daily.

Project Description
This project is to repair the broken pump in Kolibantang.

The two main parts of the pump that need to be replaced include the cylinder and the head of the pump. While the village development committee has attempted to make the replacements in the past, lack of funds has prohibited their success.

The work will be carried out by the village pump mechanic, who believes the job can be completed in a matter of days. Members of the community will help as needed.

Water Charity funds will be used to pay the skilled worker and purchase the necessary parts.

The village has gathered nearly 10,000 Dalasi to pay for the remainder of the costs, and to save for future repairs.

Project Impact
500 people in the school and the community will benefit from the project.
