Wat Wang Kree School Bathroom Project – Thailand

Location
Ban Wang Kree, Namaipai Sub-district, Thung Song District, Nakhonsithammarat Province, Thailand

Community Description
Namaipai is sub-district of 14 villages, with three primary education schools. One of these schools is located in Ban Wang Kree, which is a small village of 393 people in the southeast part of the sub-district. Community members are mostly rubber tree or palm farmers.

Last year, the villages of Namaipai were affected by the floods which hit most of Southern Thailand. Most of the facilities at Wat Wang Kree School became unsanitary due to the damage caused by inundating flood water. However, they have remained in use because other facilities, such as roads and classrooms, required more attention.

The outdoor restrooms of the school are located at the back of the school and near the cafeteria. Over the past months, they have shown exponential decay. Some doors of the student restrooms need to be replaced and piping and water faucets have shown corrosion, with large amounts of water being wasted every day.

The walls of the boy’s urinal have deteriorated and the faucets for the trough need to be repaired as they also leak and create a health hazard. The roof has been decomposing, resulting in pools of standing water within the restrooms and boy’s trough, which creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects.

Project Description
This project is to renovate the outdoor restrooms of the school. The work will include structural improvements, piping, and additions and modifications to improve the safety and sanitation of the facilities.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase supplies, including materials for new wall coverings, new wood for construction of roof and doors, faucet heads, PVC piping, and miscellaneous plumbing tools such as adhesive caulk, and scrapers.

Community members with construction background will volunteer their time and equipment for the repairs and construction.

Project Impact
There are currently 117 students in grades Kindergarten through 9th attending Wat Wang Kree School (128 students expected next year), 15 teachers and one principal who will benefit from the project.
