Community Description
The Vynnyky Sanatorium Secondary Boarding School is home to 220 orphans and social orphans. Fourteen are orphans and ten are special needs children. All of the children have tubercle bacillus, but they are not ill. Most of the children are from poor families where the parents are ill with tuberculosis. It is necessary to isolate these children from their family living situations.
The ten physically handicapped children have different types of special needs, such as cerebral palsy and poor eyesight.
The children who live at the school are well-supported by a staff of 100 (42 teachers and 58 technical staff). Under the leadership of the current director, Liliya Svystovych, the school has undergone much-needed renovation to improve the living conditions for the children. Most recently the school received donations of used equipment to renovate the kitchen and cafeteria.
In spite of the upgraded kitchen, the water quality at the school is very poor. Donated bottled water is provided for the children to drink, but the food is prepared with water contaminated with excess minerals and chlorine.
For children whose health could be easily compromised, the cleanest water possible would be the ideal for preparing their meals.
Project Description
This project is to install a water filtration system in the kitchen to provide clean water for cooking and dishwashing.
Bluefilters, a water filter company in Lviv, worked with the school to find the ideal system.
The BigBlue industrial water filter to be used is designed to purify drinkable water and water for domestic purposes. It protects pipelines against possible damages. The filter includes replaceable cartridges.
The filter contains 3 filtration stages:
- First stage: 20-micron sediment filter – removes such mechanical contaminants as: sand, fibers, rust, mud and silt.
- Second stage – granular activated carbon cartridge – removes chlorine and its derivatives, lead and other toxic heavy metals, organic compounds, pesticides and detergents.
- Third filtration stage – 5-micron sediment filter – removes the remaining contaminants of the size above 5 microns.
The owner of the business will install the system at no charge. The project cost includes the first replacement cartridges which must be installed in six months.
The school will support the cost of replacement filters going forward, either through donations or from the operating budget. Either way, the school staff is dedicated to ensuring that their children are getting clean water.
Project Impact
220 orphans and social orphans plus a staff of 100 will benefit from this project.
