Sovetskiy District Music School Sanitation Project – Ukraine

Location
Sovetskiy, AR Crimea, Ukraine

Community Description
Sovetskiy district is located in a rural area, the northeast part of AR Crimea. It consists of 40 small family farming villages mainly producing grains and vegetables. Its population of approximately 35,000 is ethnically diverse with Ukrainian, Russian, Crimean Tartar, and other minorities.

Sovetskiy District Music School started in 1969 in an old agriculture office by teaching children on piano and accordion. Over the past 44 years, the school has grown to an institution with 12 professional music teachers giving instructions on piano, violin, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, and guitar, as well as on singing in the choir, to 93 students, and promoting music in the community by participating in community events and giving concerts.

During the past three years, 458 students finished the certificate courses and 68 students continued to post-secondary and higher music study. Three of them won competitions in Russian and Ukrainian music. Also, the school’s violin ensemble won the third place in Crimean competition recently

The school has plumbing for water, but no sewage system and no toilet facility. Therefore, children use the unkempt outdoor public toilet nearby, and wash their hands in the washbasin located in the school hallway.

Since there is no sewage system, dirty water from the sink is collected in buckets that are placed underneath the sink. When buckets are full teachers empty them outside. In such a situation, frequent hand washing cannot be well encouraged.

Also, oftentimes the dirty water overflows to the floor or stays in the buckets for days. Considering the fact that many students share musical instruments for lessons, it is easy for pathogenic organisms to spread between students and threaten the health of students and teachers.

Project Description
This project is to install a sewage system and to replace the sink and wash area divider.

The construction will be carried out by skilled craftsmen as follows:

  1. Dig drain hole, 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 1.5 m, and line it with bricks
  2. Dig trench and connect from building to drain pit
  3. Install new sink and plumbing
  4. Plaster wall and replace damaged partition

The community will replace the lighting fixture, hang a mirror over the sink, install plastic strips around the sink to protect the wall and paint the wash area.

Project Impact
98 students and 12 teachers will benefit from the project.
