Sare Demba Mballo Well Repair Project – Senegal
The village of Sare Demba Mballo in the community Rural of Sare Bidji in the region of Kolda is made up almost entirely of Pulaar peasant farmers. There are approximately 250 residents year round; the number increases slightly to about 300 during the rainy season.
Roughly 60% of the villagers are under 20 years old. Many of the children under 10 years old suffer from food insecurity and improper weaning, which is shown by swollen bellies, diarrheal disease, and often stunting.
This year there is a crisis as a result of the government not buying peanuts. The receipts from peanuts are relied up by the village for income.
The project will fix wells that are in disrepair, unsafe, and providing unclean drinking water. Three wells will be targeted that are the main source for drinking water for roughly 90% of the village.
The project will start with the one that is in worst condition and continue sequentially until they are all finished.
Each well will be lined with cement to at least three meters down. A lip will be built around the well to prevent small children from falling in. The ground around the well will be cemented to prevent erosion.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
It is always more cost effective to repair a well than it is to build a new one. In this case, three wells are upgraded to improve the quality of the water, make them safer, and increase their functionality and useful life.
