Community Description
Sambande is a small Seereer village of 500 people located 20 kilometers south of Kaolack and several kilometers from the nearest paved road. There is no electricity and the main source of income for the village is peanut and millet farming.
In the center of the village is the Sambande Primary School, a four-room building that serves approximately 150 students and is staffed by six teachers.
There are currently no latrines at the school and the students answer the call of nature directly behind the classroom. This not only causes an unpleasant learning environment, but also causes diarrheal diseases.
In order to use the restroom teachers must leave their classes for up to 15 minutes and walk to another compound to use a private family latrine.
Project Description
This project is to construct a building containing three separate latrines, one for boys, one for girls and one for teachers.
All three latrines will empty into a central septic tank that can be readily pumped when full.
The community is donating the labor to dig the septic tank as well as the rocks and gravel to mix with the cement. Each student will contribute a nominal amount for the upkeep of the supplies necessary for proper hygiene.
Upon completion of the project, a handwashing mural will be painted and a school-wide hygiene lesson will be conducted.
Project Impact
This project will directly benefit the 150 students that attend the school. Indirect benefit will accrue to all 500 members of the community through the reduction in the incidence of disease.

This project is needed for the public health and dignity of the community. It will reduce the incidence of disease and improve the well-being of the students and population.
This project is being coordinated with a separate well improvement project being undertaken by Jennie in the same community. It will allow for the benefit to be derived from the use of a mason who comes from another village, in that both projects will be accomplished in a single trip.
