Community Description
Saare Aboudou is a rural Pulaar village located about 13 km Southeast of Kounkane in the Kolda region. The village is surrounded by forest and agricultural fields. 412 people live in Saare Aboudou, more than half of whom are children. The village has no electricity, running water, or primary school.
Presently, there are only four cemented or semi-cemented latrines in Saare Aboudou. Most people go to the bathroom in the woods, fields, backyard areas, and, in the case of small children, right in the front yard. As a result, sanitation-related illnesses are extremely common, especially in children.
Project Description
This project is to build eight simple pit latrines. These latrines will have 2 m by 2 m reinforced cement platforms, placed over pits that are 2 m deep and 1 m in diameter.
Project funds will be used to purchase materials, including cement, iron bars for reinforcement, wood for molding the cement platforms, and pipes for ventilation. They will also be used to pay the mason to build the platforms.
Villagers will transport materials to the village, dig the pits, and provide sand and rocks to mix with the cement. They will also use local materials to construct the enclosures for the latrines.
The platforms of the latrines are designed to be reusable. When the first pit is full, a second pit can be dug and the platform moved over the new pit. One platform should be able to last up to 20 years.
The project also includes a general hygiene causerie, hand washing
demonstrations, and training about how to detect signs of imminent latrine collapse. Trainings with villagers are to be done by the Saare Aboudou Health Committee.
Project Impact
At least 180 people will have access to the new latrines.

This project is of the appropriate technology for the location and will have a high impact in reducing disease for a small investment.
There is a very significant community contribution. When combined with the fact that the platforms will serve for a long time, the project is seen to be very sustainable.
