The Nuevo Progreso Pump Project provided a hydraulic water pump with accessories to the school of Nuevo Progreso, so they could have running water in their school. The pump will benefit all 28 children and two teachers in the school, as well as community members who access the well and pump.
Specific work done
A pump and accessories were purchased and installed in an 18-meter well next to the school and connected to the school electric system in order to have running water for the first time in the school.
Progression of project
Mil Milagros (MM) staff members completed a thorough price analysis of pumps, together with community members and well experts in order to acquire the appropriate pump at a reasonable price. The community then received labor and parts quotes from four different sources and chose the most affordable source. Finally, community and school members supervised the installation of the pump and the connection of the electricity.
End result of project
Since the installation of the water pump, children and families are able to access running water. The mothers access the pump to prepare nourishing meals each school day and the children access the water to wash their hands and brush their teeth. The water is also filtered with the Sawyer filters previously donated to the school and the children are able to drink the water during recess and lunch. One of the school’s teachers, Magdalena, told us, “Having water has changed everything in the school. The children’s hygiene habits have improved and everyone is able to enjoy the water. Thank you!”
