Community Description
Muille is a small farming village of 500 people, located 22 kilometers south of Kaffrine, in the heart of the peanut basin. Most households are subsistence farmers during the rainy months, growing peanuts, millet, corn and sorghum. After selling the bulk of their crops in November small-scale gardening supplements their income. The village is mostly of the Wolof ethnic group and is completely Muslim.
Muille has one French primary school and two Koranic schools, one of which has no latrine. Many of the households of Muille also are without latrines, leading to residents using the surrounding fields.
Project Description
This project is to build 10 pit latrines throughout the Muille community.
9 households have been chosen within the community to receive latrines, as well as one for the Koranic School.
The latrines will be dug two meters deep and 1 meter in diameter. The households receiving latrines will be responsible for digging the holes. Four community members have volunteered to dig the hole at the Koranic school.
The latrines will then be cement lined by a hired mason and capped with a cement pad.
The community will provide the water and sand used by the mason. Each household receiving a latrine will contribute the equivalent of $2 towards the mason’s fee.
Along with building the latrines, each household will be educated in the importance of bathroom hygiene to prevent sickness.
Water Charity funds will be used for the latrine materials, including rebar and cement, as well as the fee of the mason to build the latrines.
Project Impact
The 9 households hold up to 110 adults and children, and have agreed to share their latrines with neighbors, as is the norm in the village.
The Koranic School has 42 children that attend and will be using the latrine.
