Community Description
Morarano Chrome is a town and commune in the Eastern part of Madagascar. It is one of 20 communes in the district of Amparafaravola, which is a part of Alaotra-Mangoro Region.
Over 80% of the population of the commune are farmers, and 10% make their livelihood from raising livestock. The most important crop is rice. Each farmer works on different rice fields, but they work together in farmers’ associations on projects related to infrastructure, irrigation, and waterworks.
Crop yields are inadequate because there is no current way of bringing water to fields at higher elevations. The planting season normally begins in November and December, but because there is no water flowing to these fields during the dry season, they must wait until January for planting when the rainy season arrives.
Project Description
This project is to purchase and install a water pump to expand the production of rice in the community.
The project will be implemented by the local association, Tansaha Corona Hiady Amin’ny Fahantrana (Farmers Ready to Fight Against Poverty).
The water pump will serve to move the water to some fields at a higher elevation so the area where rice can be planted will be expanded by 2 hectares to 5.5 hectares.
Project funds will be used to purchase and transport the water pump.
The Association will use dues to pay for the installation of the water pump. Future repairs will be done by knowledgeable mechanics in the community.
Project Impact
Over 150 people who work in the fields, and their families, will benefit from the project.
