Mandinaba Pump Project – The Gambia

Location
Mandinaba Village, Kombo East, Western Region, The Gambia, West Africa

Community Description
Mandinaba is a medium-sized village made up of approximately 2,500 people.
It is located directly on the South Bank Road, about 7 kilometers from the town of Brikama.

Because Mandinaba is very close to the River Gambia, the lands are rich and strong. Farmers in the community are able to grow enough food to feed their families as well as grow cash crops. There is always more than enough grown to share. Mangoes, oranges, and groundnuts grow year-round.

Mandinaba has a well-constructed village community council that interacts with the community to tackle any challenge that arises.

The two pumps that are involved in this project no longer function, and many people have resorted to using wells that have been covered for many years, and contain water that is not potable.

Project Description
This project is to repair the presently inoperative double pump system that serves Mandinaba Village.

Project funds will be used for new end pieces for the pump cylinders.

The village is providing a trained technician who will do other simple maintenance procedures as needed. In addition, it will pay the costs of new chains, axles, and bearings.

Project Impact
This project will provide clean, safe drinking water to 750 men, women, and children. In addition, it will make water collection much safer for the adolescent girls who are presently responsible for pulling up the water from the deep well.

Comments
This is a perfect Appropriate Projects project in that a relatively small amount of money quickly resolves a dire problem. A deep well and pump system, which was expensive to build, and which now remains idle, is being repaired, and will provide safe water for an entire community.

The community has shown its commitment to the project by paying for other labor and parts. This ensures the sustainability of the well.
