Community Description
The Manyagiro sector of the Gicumbi District is located in the northern province of Rwanda in East Africa. The rural area is mountainous and does not have running water, spigots or electricity. Subsistence farming is the main source of income for residents of the Manyagiro sector.
The MAFUREBO Primary School is determined to educate the youth that attends through a progressive and forward-thinking curriculum.
The previously completed MAFUREBO Primary School Water Project – Rwanda resulted in the building of a water collection and storage system at the school. Additional work is needed to distribute water throughout the school and ensure the safety of the water supply.
Project Description
This project will consist of two parts:
First, an above-ground spigot will be constructed and connected to existing underground piping. This will provide clean water for the entire school. Concrete steps leading to the spigot will ensure safe usage.
The second part is the construction of a concrete cover, to replace the metal one, for the existing water collection tank. This will prevent rust and contamination of water collected and stored in the tank.
This project is being carried out in partnership with the school, the Parents and Teachers Association, and the local government sector.
Information on the use and importance of hand washing and hygiene will be illustrated through demonstrations and lessons integrated into the existing curriculum throughout the school year. Additional teachings on health and hydration will be highlighted as well.
Project funds will be used to cover the costs of materials, supplies, transport fees, and skilled labor.
Project Impact
Approximately 1,320 teachers and students will directly benefit from this project.
