Lutugino Educational Complex School #1 Water Filter Project – Ukraine

Lutugino Educational Complex School #1 Water Filter Project - UkraineLocation

Lutugino, Luganks Oblast, Ukraine

Community Description
Lutugino, in the heart of Eastern Ukraine in Lugansk Oblast, is a small industrial town with population of about 25,000 with both a factory and a coal mine. Like many other small towns in the region the resources are scarce and access is very limited.

Lutugino Educational Complex School #1 is one of the three schools in town with about 600 students. The school functions in two shifts and caters to students from all grades, 1st to 11th, serving breakfast and lunch to students and faculty each day using local water. The cafeteria serves meals to students on rotating shifts, having to prepare and serve about 1 to 3 classes at a time.

Lutugino Educational Complex School #1 Water Filter Project - UkraineThe proximity to the coal mines has an effect on the quality of water. There is high level of minerals in the water. However, the current practice of boiling the water does not remove all of the minerals.

Currently the cafeteria boils water for washing dishes and cleaning. Lack of hot water is especially burdensome in the extremely cold months of winter (down to -35 degree Celsius).

Project Description

This project is to purchase and install a water filter in the kitchen that serves the cafeteria of Lutugino Educational Complex School #1. In addition, a boiler to provide hot water will be purchased and installed.

Lutugino Educational Complex School #1 Water Filter Project - UkraineThe Acvafor Favorit filtration system will clean up to 12,000 liter of water, 2.5 liters of water per minute. The filtration system will be installed in the school kitchen. The water will be used for cooking and also for providing students with clean drinking water. The filtration system will remove impurities such as chlorine, heavy metal ions, organic compounds, bacteria, and all other contaminants.

The Wester Quasar Plus boiler installed in the kitchen will provide the school with its only source of hot water. With the installation of the boiler, the kitchen will have hot water for washing dishes and for all other cleaning use in school.

Project funds will be used to purchase the water filtration system, boiler and one additional filter replacement. The school will pay for installation and for future filter replacements.

The school staff is eager to have this new improved kitchen. They have already made all necessary arrangement for purchase and installation of the equipment. The project has led the staff to think about ways to save water and to provide students with better resources.

A water filter will reduce the amount of harmful contaminants the children consume daily. It also adds to the functionality of cafeteria, allowing staff to have access to better water for all meals, to serve more students, and to have safe drinking water accessible for students at all time.

The boiler will greatly save time and energy for the staff, allowing them to better do their job, by eliminating the need to boil water for sanitation.
