Community Description
Leliani is a small agrarian village (pop. 2,000) located in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. The village is situated near the Azerbaijani border, and is a multi-ethnic village with ethnic Georgians and Ossetians living together.
“Leli” is an NGO and community-based organization, with the strategic goals to provide non-formal education to people living in the rural areas of Kakheti, specifically youth and women, to support the integration of ethnic minorities living in the area, and to increase the community’s awareness of civil society development.
Currently, the only school in the village of Leliani, serving approximately 300 students, does not have access to clean water for drinking or sanitation purposes.
During the Soviet era, the school was provided water access through a nearby natural spring and piping that directs water from 150 feet below the ground. The water was then re-directed 100 yards to the school to a drinking fountain and hand washing area.
However, after the fall of the Soviet Union and subsequent wars with Russia, the school has not been able to maintain the system that brings the clean natural spring water to the school. The natural spring and pipes still pumps water from 150 feet underground, but it is currently not accessible to the school students or teachers since the water source is located over 100 yards away over a drainage ditch. Also, there is no water closely available for students to wash their hands after using the bathroom.
Project Description
The project is to bring clean water to the school through the installation of piping from the local source. An existing drinking fountain and an existing handwashing station will be refurbished and made functional.
The work will be completed by a local plumber who has assisted the community center on the previous Appropriate Projects water projects. Volunteers will also be utilized to assist in installing the drinking fountain and washing station.
Project Impact
Over 700 community members will benefit from the project, including 296 students (grades 1-12), 31 teachers, and approximately 400 parents and other community members who regularly use the school or attend events held at the school each year.

Comments
This project will provide immediate clean drinking water and water for sanitation to the school, and thus will improve the health and wellbeing of all who spend time there.
Kamran previously successfully completed the Leli 1 Community Center Bathroom Project – Georgia and the Leli Community Center Pump Project – Georgia.
