Kozyatyn Village School No. 9 Water Project – Ukraine

Location
Kozyatyn Village, Kozyatyn Rayon, Vinnytska Oblast, Ukraine

Community Description
Kozyatyn Village is a wonderful small village located near the Rayon center in the upper part of Vinnytska Oblast. It is a close-knit community full of family and friends. Spring has sprung and everyone is tending to their kitchen gardens, which are really twice the size of most American backyards.

Kozyatyn Village School No. 9 is located in the central portion of the village, allowing children on the outskirts of the village to come to school. There are 150 students from 1st – 11th grade and roughly 30 staff members.

Problem Addressed
The water supply at the school contains high levels of chemicals, minerals, bacteria, and other contaminants. Children experience frequent illness from the water used for drinking and cooking.

The school does not receive the funding afforded to city schools, and does not have the resources to alleviate its water problem.

Project Description
This project is to install a water filter, large basin sinks, and drinking stations in the kitchen area to provide clean water for cooking, cleaning, and drinking.

A 5-stage reverse osmosis filter will be installed in the kitchen. It will contain the following stages:

1: Sediment filter will remove particulates down to 5 microns.
2-3: Carbon block filter removes chemicals like chlorine which can cause funky taste and smells if left.
4: TFC membrane rejects impurities down to 1/10,000th of a micron (which is really small!).
5: Finally it is filtered for water quality and taste.

Two deep sinks to will be installed in the kitchen. This will allow for the use of less water for washing dishes after meals.

Lastly, a drinking station will be installed. This water will come through the filter in the kitchen, making sure it is clean for the kids to drink.

Parents who are skilled construction workers will do the plumbing and installation work.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the filter, sinks, fixtures, piping, fittings, and other materials.

The rest of the community will cover any shortfall, and provide resources to improve the kitchen.

Project Impact
180 staff and students will benefit from the project.
