Kidumfa Primary School Rainwater Catchment Project – Kenya

Location
Kidumfa Village, Mukindu District, Ol’Kalou Constituency, Kenya

Community Description
The village is made up of displaced persons from the Turkana tribe. They moved to the area because of tribal and political unrest about 7 years ago. Currently, the land is government-owned and run by the Kikuyu tribe. They are very isolated, especially during the rainy season, where even mobile clinics cannot reach them.

The village has one primary school, the Kidumfa Primary School, with around 250 students. After primary school, there are no other options for the children. Most boys go to work, and the girls stay home with the children. Water for use at the school must currently be retrieved from a shallow lake about 1 km away.

Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater catchment and storage system for the primary school.  A 3,200 Liter plastic water tank will be purchased at Ol’Kalou Town and transported to the school.  A concrete platform will be built by members of the community, and the tank will be installed on top.  2-3″ aluminum gutters will be purchased and installed. A 1″ aluminum pipe will connect the gutters to the tank.

The water will be drawn by a gate valve installed a few inches from the bottom of the tank Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the materials.

Water from the tank will be used for drinking by the children at the school, and as needed by residents of the village, just a few hundred meters from the tank location.

A seminar will be given on the health, hygiene, and maintenance of the system.

Project Impact
250 children, 8 teachers, and one headmaster at the school will benefit. An additional 100 children and their parents and grandparents in the village will also benefit.
