Kebbeh Kunda Garden Well Project – The Gambia

 Location
Kebbeh Kunda, Kontora District, Upper River Region, The Gambia

Community Description
The village of Kebbeh Kunda is a small Fula community of around 500 people in the Kontora District of the Upper River Region of The Gambia.

A recent USAID project provided funding for fencing, a well, and garden resources to the community to meet the community’s need for food security and income generation. However, shortly thereafter, the well went dry, and there is no adequate water source to support the community garden. The women are left to wait in long lines to use the only water pump in the village, and must then carry the water to the garden.

Project Description
This project is to deepen the well to provide water for the community garden.

The existing dry well is 12 meters deep and will be extended to 15 meters. The work will be implemented under the direction of the Kebbeh Kunda Kewrar Women’s Kafoo, and work will be performed by a third-party well contractor.

The work will include pumping the water out of the well while digging an additional 3 meters, one at a time, lining the walls with concrete as each meter is completed.

Water Charity funds will be used to purchase cement, steel reinforcing bars, and binding wire, to pay the workers and pay for travel and transportation, and to provide gas for the water pump.

The community will participate by providing the gravel and sand for the concrete, as well as providing food and lodging for the laborers.

Project Impact
The 90 women who have garden plots in the community garden will directly benefit from the restoration of the garden well. Their families and the rest of the community will benefit indirectly from the availability of nutritious food and income-generating activity.

Comments
This is an example of the ability of Appropriate Projects to help a community to immediately deal with an unforeseen circumstance. A modest amount of money will bring the well to full functionality, thereby providing the community with needed resources to make the garden successful.
