Community Description
Kebare Primary School is located in the Nyabasi West region of the Kuria East District in Kenya. According to the Kenya Population and Housing Census in 2009, Nyabasi West is 28 km^2 and has a total population of 11,500 people (5,800 males; 5,700 females) with 1,700 households.
Most individuals in the Nyabasi West community are subsistence farmers with harvesting seasons in the months of August and December. There are high rates of unemployment and poverty in the community. There is also a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and a lack of safe-water access in the community.
Problem Addressed
There is currently no access to safe, potable drinking water for the 150 students at Kebare Primary School, neighboring households and community members.
Students and community members currently access their water from a stream located approximately two kilometers from the school. This water source poses grave public health concerns for the community, due to animals such as cows and goats drinking from the same water source as humans. This further increases the likelihood of acquiring waterborne diseases, such as typhoid or cholera.
Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater catchment system to provide for the water needs of the school.
The project is being implemented by the school with the participation of the Komotobo Maranatha Faith Assemblies/Kuria East Team for Excellence. It will provide water to be used for drinking, hygiene, cooking, and cleaning.
A cement foundation will be created to provide stability for the tank. The tank will then be placed on top of the foundation and the gutters will then be installed.
A tank between 3,000 and 5,000 liters will be purchased for the school using Water Charity funds. The funds will also be used to purchase cement needed to lay the foundation, gutters for the water-catchment system, transport for the tank, and a 20-liter handwashing station for the students.
The community will provide the labor needed to build the foundation and place the gutters.
Project Impact
150 students, plus members of the surrounding households and church near the school, will directly benefit from the project.
