Community Description
Katesh Secondary School is located in Katesh town, which is at the base of Mount Hanang, the 4th highest mountain in Tanzania. Most of the staff and students at the school are part of the Iraqw or Barbaig tribes. Nearly half of the students come from families living in town and the other half of the students come from rural, farming families outside of town.
Problem Addressed
Many of the students of Katesh Secondary School are chronically sick with stomach illnesses, making them miss school for days or weeks at a time. There is little knowledge in the community about the importance of hand washing with soap, and at the school there is no infrastructure for the students to wash their hands before eating or after using the toilet.
Project Description
This project is to build a handwashing station at the Katesh Secondary School grounds.
The station will be located between the bathrooms and the kitchen, both of which are directly behind all of the classrooms. It will consist of a water tank, a support structure for the tank, steel piping, faucets, and a basin for collecting wastewater.
A 2,000-liter heavy-duty plastic tank will be purchased and transported to the site. The tank will be filled from the kitchen, using a flexible plastic pipe, from water supplied by the community water system.
The sink will be made from cement and will be constructed as a rectangular trough. There will be 8 faucets, in 2 sets of 4.
The plan is for wastewater to be collected in buckets to use for the pour-flush latrines in order to conserve water. However, it may be decided to instead build a soak pit on the edge of the school grounds.
The school will provide the water tank and all of the materials for making bricks, including mud brick molds.
Water Charity funds will pay for materials, including cement, rebar, and chicken wire for the support structure, taps, and piping, as well as labor costs.
The labor will be performed by a local construction worker who frequently works with the school, and the students will be doing all of the brick-making labor.
