Poltavsk’a Oblast is situated in the central part of Ukraine. Lubny is reputed to be one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, and today it is a large industrial and cultural center.
Hope Children’s Center is an orphanage for street children in the outskirts of Lubny. The orphanage has the capacity to serve 25 children ages 4-17. Its goal is to rehabilitate children holistically, seeking to provide not only food, safety, and support, but also more individualized care and assistance to become leaders and contributing members of society.
Common waterborne illnesses such as parasites and amoebas plague the city water supply, rendering tap water unusable without boiling it. However, boiling water further condenses long-term harmful substances.
In a recent tap water test at the center, it was found to contain a great number of toxins, including excess nitrates, magnesium, and other harmful chemicals that have been proven to cause problems with both teeth and bones.
This project is to provide a reverse osmosis water filtration system and dispenser in the orphanage kitchen.
The filtration system technology will link directly into the water pipes and will plug into an outlet in the kitchen’s wall. It will utilize 5 stages of filtration to clean water of 92-99% of all contaminants.
The first stage (sediment cartridge) will filter out sand, rust, mud, and sediment. The second stage (granular active carbon cartridge) will remove bad smells as well as filtering chlorine and organic sediments out of the water. The third filter stage (blocking active carbon cartridge) will filter suspended particles. The next, (RO membrane) will remove bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, salts, and other harmful substances. The last filter stage (in-line post active carbon cartridge) will adjust pure water taste, keeping water fresh.
The clean water filtration system will be purchased by the director of the orphanage and the PCV through a local vendor in the city using Water Charity funds.
A local businessman has pledged to provide the remainder of the amount needed to complete the project.
The installation will be done by the vendor. The system is guaranteed, and 5 years of service are included.
25 orphaned children, 5 full-time staff, and 15 volunteers will benefit from the project.
