Djerelo Center for People Living with HIV/AIDS Bathroom Project – Ukraine
Rubizhne, Lugansk Oblast, Ukraine
The town of Rubizhne is located in Ukraine in the Lugansk Oblast and has a population of 64,000. The Lugansk Oblast is situated in the most eastern region in Ukraine and borders Russia.
Djerelo is an NGO (non-governmental organization) in Rubizhne that provides services for people living with HIV/AIDS in the Lugansk Oblast. Djerelo serves clients from Rubizhne as well as 4 other neighboring towns and villages. Djerelo is the only organization of its kind in the region.
Currently, Djerelo serves over 400 adults and children who are living with HIV/AIDS. These services include assisting clients in receiving regular and comprehensive medical care, guiding clients in finding work and housing, providing psychological and emotional support, and acting as advocates for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Djerelo is continually expanding its services to address the growing need in the community, and has recently started preventative initiatives aimed at the most at-risk populations.
The current office space has one operating bathroom, and is unable to support the number of staff and clients who go to the center on a daily basis. Support groups, trainings, and clubs for children are difficult to support as the one toilet facility often breaks from overuse.
Recently, Djerelo acquired the second floor of their building from the city of Rubizhne in order to expand their center. Djerelo is currently working with community partners and volunteers to renovate the space. However, the bathrooms are in complete disrepair and cannot be fixed without significant reworking and renovation.
The bathroom has not been in use for several years due to lack of toilets and sinks. Consequently, the pipes have broken down and now require replacing.
This project is to renovate the existing bathroom on the second floor of the center in order to have sufficient working toilets and sinks for Djerelo's staff and clients.
The actual remodel will be conducted by community volunteers, and tools will be supplied by the community.
409 clients (adults and children) as well as 150 support group, training, and youth club participants will benefit from the project.
Peace Corps Volunteer Directing Project
